BRIEF BIOGRAPHY:

Robert J. Gatchel was born in New York City, New York on October 23, 1947. He is the middle of five children born to John and Mary Gatchel. The Gatchel clan was raised on Long Island, first in Levittown, then Bay Shore, and finally Port Jefferson, where Bob attended junior and senior high school. The number one love of "Bobby Gatch," as he was called in high school, was athletics - where he excelled in baseball and football. His childhood hero was Duke Snider of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and his earliest memorable event was when his beloved Dodgers won their first World Series in 1955 by beating the cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees. Since that early age, he always dreamed about becoming a major league baseball player. During his senior year in high school, he was offered a college baseball scholarship. However, while playing football that year, when he was co-captain of the team with his long-term friend John Romanski, he severely tore his anterior curciate ligament and meniscus, and had to reluctantly "hang up his spikes" and his long-term dream of baseball.

As Bob has often encountered in life, the "closing of one door" or passion often "opens up another door." In this case, it was psychology. As an undergraduate psychology major at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and no longer distracted by "serious athletics," he began working as an assistant in Dr. James Geer's psychophysiological research laboratory. One of Dr. Greer's major research interests was the evaluation of psychophysiological concomitants of attention. This marked the beginnings of Dr. Gatchel's interest in mind-body relationships, which became a consistent focus in all of his subsequent research and is the root of his current involvement in clinical health psychology, biopsychsocial processes and outcomes research. He also became interested in the effects of uncontrollable stress on psychophysiological responding, which became the topic of his undergraduate honors thesis under the supervision of Drs. Greer and Gerald Davidson. His findings of a relationship between perceived control of stress and its impact on autonomic responding were subsequently published. [Geer, J.H., Davidson, G.C. & Gatchel, R.J. (1970). Reduction of stress in humans through nonveridical perceived control of aversive stimulation. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 16, 731-738], further stimulating his interest in the psychophysiology of stress and emotion and the scientific exploration of how mind-body relationships could be scientifically explored. At Stony Brook, he was also fortunate to have been exposed to some of the leading "new breed" of psychologists with an interest in social learning theory - Gerald Davidson, Leonard Krasner, Dan O'Leary, Marvin Goldfried, Tom D'Zurilla, Stu Valins, and Jerome Singer, just to name a few.

Dr. Geer then guided him to the laboratory of Dr. Peter Lang at the University of Wisconsin, where he began graduate training in Clinical Psychology in 1969. Lang's research focused on learned control of physiological responses, and represented an ideal "fit," providing a unique blend of psychophysiological research with the clinical assessment-treatment applications of biofeedback as a modality for treating maladaptive psychophysiological responding. Also, again, at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Gatchel was exposed to a veritable "Who's Who List" of leading clinical researchers, such as Alan Marlatt, Richard McFall, Loren and Jean Chapman, David and Frances Graham, Howard Leventhal, Leonard Berkowitz, Charles Cleeland, and Harry Harlow. In addition, he had many classmates who later developed successful academic careers - Bruce Cuthbert, Constance Hammen, Raphael Klorman, Barbara Melamed, Gregory Miller, Lois Putnam, Mike Raulin and Bob Simons, to name a few. He completed the Ph.D. requirements in 3 years, and completed a clinical psychology internship at the Wisconsin State Bureau of Clinical Services in the Summer of 1973.

In the Fall of 1973, he became an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. A major benefit was this University's ability to completely finance a state-of-the-art psychophysiological research laboratory. Moreover, he was given a joint appointment at the UT Health Science Center at Dallas (which is now UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas). This allowed an uninterrupted continuation of his work on learned heart rate control and the opportunity to apply these procedures to mental health and medical patient populations at UT Southwestern. He received his first R01 research grant from the National Institutes of Health in 1977, entitled "Investigation of Learned Heart Rate Control." One of the first rounds of grants reviewed by the new Behavioral Medicine Study Section at the NHLBI, it marked the beginning of his uninterrupted NIH-funded research to this day. The research project itself involved the evaluation of psychophysiological patterns associated with learned heart rate control, as well as the application of such procedures to two patient populations: one mental health (those with public speaking anxiety) and the other a medical population (patients with premature ventricular contractions). This research again highlighted his interest in the psychophysiology of stress and emotion, and in evaluating the effectiveness of biopsychosocial techniques with various medical and mental health conditions, when the field of health psychology was first developing its identity.

After early promotion to Associate Professor with tenure in 1977, he accepted a position as Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Psychology at the new Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda. This was a major turning point in his career, crystallizing his interest and work in the field of clinical health psychology. He was fortunate to become associated with colleagues who subsequently became leaders in this field: Jerome E. Singer, Andy Baum, and David Krantz. the four of them, with Dr. Singer and Chairman, shared in the formulation and development of a new Ph.D. training program in health psychology. Andy Baum and he then wrote the first textbook in Health Psychology (An Introduction to Health Psychology). In the Forward to the text's second edition, Jerome Singer described their efforts as follows: "...they had the opportunity to help structure a new field. To the extent that textbooks now copy the format of previous successful books, texts that follow theirs would adopt their organization, and, in pragmatic fashion, the field would be defined by what was in their textbook." This text is now in its third edition.

In 1981, he returned to UT Southwestern to train clinical psychology graduate students and develop a health psychology component to the doctoral training program in Clinical Psychology. A full-time appointment in the Medical Center in the Departments of Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Science also provided him with the clinical populations needed in future research endeavors. His research was beginning to shift away from traditional laboratory psychophysiology to more applied clinical and health psychology areas. Two major areas emerged: one in behavioral medicine (the assessment-treatment of chronic back pain) and the other in behavioral dentistry (the assessment-treatment of dental fear and anxiety, as well as temporomandibular disorders). These interdisciplinary research areas allowed him to apply biopsychosocial techniques to medical and physical health environments, and systematically evaluate the comorbidity of mental and physical health disorders.

At UT Southwestern, he became the Elizabeth H. Penn Professor of Clinical Psychology, and Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry, Anesthesiology & Pain Management, and Rehabilitation Counseling. He is also the Clinical Research Program Director at The Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management. In addition, since its inception in 1983, he has been the Director of Clinical Research at the Productive Rehabilitation Institute of Dallas for Ergonomics (PRIDE), which first introduced the interdisciplinary functional restoration approach to musculoskeletal disorders, such as spinal pain disability. As of June 1, 2004, Dr. Gatchel has come "full circle" back to the University of Texas at Arlington, where his academic career first began in 1973. He is now the Chairman of Psychology, College of Science, at that Institution, and is the recipient of The Nancy P. and John G. Penson Endowed Professorship in Clinical Health Psychology. He has maintained his clinical appointments at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Gatchel has also been greatly involved in science education by supervising psychology graduate students, interns and psychiatry residents in clinical health psychology and the assessment and treatment of comorbid mental and physical health disorders. To date, he has mentored 61 Ph.D. dissertations, 30 Masters theses, 6 postdoctoral fellows, and has served on more than 75 other dissertation committees. Many of his students have gone on to accept postdoctoral and research positions at various prestigious institutions. Finally, as testimony to his prolific clinical research productivity, he has published 23 books, 92 book chapters and over 275 scientific journal articles. His research has focused on three major areas: 1) translating clinical research findings to "real world" situations and environments; 2) the application of the biopsychosocial approach to the etiology, assessment, treatment and prevention of chronic pain; and 3) conducting treatment-outcomes research in order to advance the field of evidence-based medicine.
