Solid Waste

802. Solid Waste

There are a number of wastes that are generated on college/university campuses associated with construction, maintenance and shops. Offices are not traditionally generators of hazardous waste, although they can generate a wide range of materials that require special disposal. Additionally, large quantities of recyclable materials are generated at these locations. Much of the equipment used on a college/university campus has the ability to be reused, recycled, or at a minimum, is required to be “rendered” safe prior to disposal.

BMP

  • Contact EH&S for disposal of all hazardous materials or if there is a doubt about proper disposal.
  •  Priority should be given to recycling any waste before disposal.
  • Contact Capital Asset Management at ext. 2-2191 for collection of items that are no longer needed in your department. Capital Asset Management will examine all material collected to determine what items can be recycled and what items can be discarded in appropriate recycling containers, i.e., metal, paper, plastic, aluminum etc. Contact the UT Arlington Office of Sustainability for the latest updates on recycling information.
  • Identify and designate collection and storage sites for recyclable materials. The site should protect the materials from breakage, cross contamination, weather and vectors.

802a. Office Waste

BMP

  • Custodial staff collects mixed office paper and place in proper containers for collection by the designated waste contractor. Recycle toner cartridges through vendors who supply copiers.
  • UT Arlington does not collect laser and ink jet printer cartridges, departments should contact their designated vendor for recycling.
  • Collection of “technotrash” items such as diskettes, DVD’s and CD’s as well as audio and video tape for proper disposal through a recycler vendor Contact the UT Arlington Office of Sustainability for recycling.

802b. Construction and Demolition Waste

BMP

  • Construction or demolition debris must be examined for recyclable items and once such items are identified, they must be separated from the waste stream before delivery to permitted landfills.
  • Before a building is renovated or demolished, it must be assessed to meet regulatory requirements, identify hazardous wastes or waste requiring special handling (i.e. asbestos containing materials), and identify opportunities for recycling materials.
  • Other wastes should be collected by the designated waste coordinator.

802c. Equipment Waste

BMP

  • Contact Capital Asset Management at ext. 2-2191 for collection used computers and components to minimize the need for disposal.
  • Consider life-cycle costs when purchasing equipment and supplies.
  • All equipment must be drained and purged of all oils, CFCs, other fluids and gases before recycling and disposal.
  • Any other hazardous components (PCBs, batteries) should also be removed prior to disposal.
  • Prior to disposal, contact the designated waste coordinator.
  • Collection of plastic bottles and aluminum cans by appropriate staff and placed in proper containers for collection by custodial staff.
