Studies in my laboratory address the molecular genetic, physiological, and ecological aspects of the interactions between bacteria and their environment. Our current focus is on the sensing of blue/UV-A light and high-intensity white light by cyanobacteria (bacteria that carry out higher plant-like photosynthesis). We are interested in how light conditions, as well as related changes in cellular and photosynthetic redox state, control gene expression within this ecologically important group of organisms that serve as simple model systems for photosynthesis-related phenomena in higher plants.
