Description of Research

Primary research interests revolve around stress and its impact on health and illness, particularly traumatic stress (e.g. disasters, warfare, assault, motor vehicle accidents), occupational stress, and stress associated with managing disease risk or chronic illness. Basic research considers biobehavioral mechanisms by which stress affects the development of disease, including immune system changes, oxidative damage to cells and associated genomic instability and the key role of the endocrine system in mediating these effects. Research also includes psychotherapeutic interventions designed to reduce stress, improve quality of life, and reduce the severity or consequences of illness. A primary interest is in cancer and immune-related diseases, and current or planned projects focus on adjustment of adolescent or adult survivors of childhood cancer, coping with breast cancer, and biobehavioral factors in the development and progression of neoplastic disease.
