Remarks FAILED - The registrar already has an option for students who want to change their ID number, and students don't want the hassle of learning another number (according to a poll conducted by the committee).
Whereas The University of Texas at Arlington currently uses Social Security numbers as a means of student identification on student records and roles; and
Whereas Increasing levels of technology make the acquisition of individual social security numbers threatening to personal information including bank accounts, credit cards, and credit histories; and
Whereas Though the Registrar's Office allows the opportunity for students to change their student identification number from their social security number to a randomly assigned identifier, students most often will not make the number change until their personal information has been targeted; and
Whereas Other Texas state universities and state universities nation-wide recognize the importance of non-social security number identifiers as being instrumental in maintain student security.
Be It Further Resolved That UTA institute a policy of non-social security number identifiers to account for students on all university-related records; and
Be It Further Resolved That This policy be implemented immediately, but may include the phasing out of current students with social security number identifiers through graduation or attrition.
