Whereas Many mathematics instructors lack oral proficiency and many students have a difficult time understanding the instructor; and
Whereas Not understanding what an instructor is saying can lead to a sub-standard understanding of the course being studied; and
Whereas The cost per three hour course can exceed $368.00 and students deserve their money's worth.
Be It Further Resolved That All Graduate Teaching Assistants required to pass the TOEFL also be required to Pass the "TSE" with a minimum score of 2.4 in the categories of Grammar, Fluency, and Pronunciation with a minmum overall score of 250 no later than the first day of August 1997 without exception; and
Be It Further Resolved That If after the first day of August 1995 any potential Graduate Teaching Assistant receives a score of less than 2.4 in Ponunciation, Grammar, and Fluency that they not be allowed to instruct UT Arlington students; and
Be It Further Resolved That Graduate Teaching Assistants scoring less than the minimum score not be prohibited from holding any non-teaching position; and
Be It Further Resolved That A faculty member may use a foreign language to conduct foreign language courses designed to be taught in a foreign language; and
Be It Further Resolved That This resolution does not prohibit a faculty member from providing individual assistance during course instruction to a non-English-speaking student in the native language of the student; and
Be It Further Resolved That Teaching evaluation forms should have, "Can you understand the speech of your instructor?" added to them.
