Remarks FAILED - There have been no complaints regarding this issue. It would be challening to make this an official policy, and it creates a slippery slope to give priority for reasons to miss school.
Whereas The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) currently adopts a policy of allowing only university excused absences to makeup their work; and
Whereas Students have major medical emergencies, extended illnesses, and family crises (including deaths); and
Whereas These students are not afforded the opportunity to make up their work after returning to class; and
Whereas This is detrimental to the student's academic performance.
Be It Further Resolved That UTA adopt a policy allowing students suffering from a medical emergency, extended illness, or family crisis to makeup school work missed after confirmation with appropriate authority (including hospital, funeral home, and/or personal physician); and
Be It Further Resolved That Discretion in the matter shall be given to the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, with a time frame set by the Vice President to determine the validity of the excuse.
