Remarks
Whereas The University has recently outlined some of its 'Mavericks Go Green' initiatives, one of which is waste reduction; and
Whereas Examples of waste reduction initiatives include UT Arlington employees switching to 'paperless' earning statements and professors no longer providing paper copies of syllabi to their students (they are available online); and
Whereas The Shorthorn prints paper editions four times a week (Tuesday through Friday) during the fall and spring semesters and once a week during the summer (Wednesday); and
Whereas The Shorthorn offers '.pdf' versions of its publications online; and
Whereas The Shorthorn's website includes all content published in each newspaper and many additional features; and
Whereas The printing costs associated with paper editions are estimated (from previous Student Service Advisory Committee [SSAC] budgets) to be over $250,000 per academic year; and The distribution costs associated with paper editions are estimated (from previous SSAC budgets) to be over $10,000 per academic year; and
Be It Further Resolved That The Shorthorn no longer print and distribute paper editions on a regular basis (to reduce waste and the current associated costs of printing and distribution).
Be It Further Resolved That The Shorthorn maintain its current guidelines for 'reprinting,' so that paper editions may be available to those who desire them.
Be It Further Resolved That The Shorthorn should be more progressive in utilizing Web 2.0 to publish online editions to maintain its mission of: 'providing news and information to the UT Arlington community, providing a forum of opinion for the UT Arlington community, and providing training for students interested in careers in journalism, advertising, and related professions .'
