Remarks
Whereas The State of Texas is faced with an approximated $11-$21 Billion Budget Deficit for the 2012-2013 biennium; and
Whereas State leadership is asking for budget cuts across state expenditures; and
Whereas Higher education has sustained 41% of the budget cuts for the 2010-2011 biennium; and
Whereas Additional budget cuts (2-3%) are already being asked of higher education institutions; and
Whereas Senate Bill 52 of the 82nd Texas Legislature Regular Session proposes a tax-free textbook weekend; and
Whereas A similar version of Senate Bill 52 (Senate Bill 22) was introduced in the 81st Regular Session of the Texas Legislature with an attached fiscal note projecting a negative impact of approximately $68,000,000 for the biennium ending August 31, 2011.
Be It Further Resolved That The University of Texas at Arlington Student Congress recognizes the negligible benefit for individuals as compared to the fiscal ramifications for the State revenue; and
Be It Further Resolved That The University of Texas at Arlington Student Congress opposes the passage of Senate Bill 52 in the 82nd Texas Legislature Regular Session.
