Remarks The committee had a very good debate about the pro's and con's of this resolution. The committee agreed that students have protective rights under FERPA and that passing the resolution would lead to unwanted scrutiny from the state.
Whereas the University of Texas at Arlington is the fifth most diverse undergraduate college in America; and
Whereas this university has an obligation to protect the safety and well-being of ALL its students; and
Whereas this obligatory protection must and does extend to our undocumented, and otherwise vulnerable students; and
Whereas Dr. Karbhari has been quoted by the Shorthorn as saying that the University of Texas at Arlington would only give out information and data requested by government agencies like ICE with a court order or subpoena.
Be It Further Resolved That The University of Texas at Arlington independently claims itself as a sanctuary campus, and refuse to communicate or cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement without a court order.
