Remarks The Student Affairs Committee and Student Senate felt that this Resolution would be able to help correct the disparity in the budget between Adaptive Sports and their able-bodied counterparts. We were surprised to find such a disparity and it is worth noting that most our members were confused as to why they were not already a part of the athletic department. We are voicing our support for the increase in the allotted budget for the Adaptive Sports Program and the increase in the fee that is most feasibly raised while effectively accomplishing the goal of adding to the Adaptive Sports Budget.
Whereas Adaptive sports teams on campus, such as the Movin’ Mavs, are currently funded under the “student services fee,” which is split between other areas not related to these teams; and
Whereas Adaptive sports teams are underfunded in comparison to their able-bodied counterparts, despite holding many national championships in their respective sports; and
Whereas UTA also uses the Movin’ Mavs as a way to show our diversity and compliance with the ADA and other laws pertaining to people with disabilities.
Be It Further Resolved That Either the Student Service fee or the Intercollegiate athletics fee be increased, if necessary, for specific designation to the department of Adaptive Sports.
