Dr. Paul Conrad

The Department of History is proud to announce that Dr. Paul Conrad has been awarded tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of History effective at the start of the 2021-22 academic year.

An expert in Native American history and the history of the North American West, Dr. Conrad is author of the forthcoming monograph, The Apache Diaspora: Four Centuries of Displacement and Survival scheduled for release by the University of Pennsylvania Press on May 28, 2021. Employing a broad chronological and geographical scope, Dr. Conrad's work sheds light on topics including genocide and Indigenous survival, the intersection of Native and African diasporas, and the rise of deportation and incarceration as key strategies of state control. The book reveals how centuries of enslavement, warfare, and forced migrations failed to bring a final solution to the supposed problem of Apache independence and mobility as Spain, Mexico, and the United States all overestimated their own power and underestimated Apache resistance and creativity.

In addition to teaching the Department's undergraduate US History surveys, Dr. Conrad regularly offers courses in Native American History and Literature for the Departments of History and English, respectively, as well as graduate courses related to his scholarly expertise. Dr. Conrad has helped make possible the establishment of the Department's undergraduate Minor and Certificate in the History of Technology and Science through his development of new courses on "Native Americans, Science and Technology" (HIST 4319) and "Technology and Science in American Society, I" (HIST 1331).

In service to the Department, College, and university, he has played a leading role in promoting student success and engagement while helping to spearhead new initiatives to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Congratulations, Dr. Conrad on these well-earned honors!
