UTA engineering faculty earn national composites honors

Andrew Makeev, a professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Composites.
A Fellow is a distinguished member who has made outstanding contributions to the composites community through research, practice, education and/or service.
Makeev was cited for his pioneering contributions to the mechanics of composite materials and structures, including transformative advances in nondestructive inspection, material characterization, and predictive structural methods and for sustained leadership in advancing composite engineering in aerospace applications.
“Dr. Makeev is a leading expert in the integration of design and manufacturing processes to improve performance of composites, structural diagnostics and prognostics,” said Kamesh Subbarao, chair of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. “His research paves the way for safe adoption of composites for critical aerospace and mechanical structural components. This recognition is a fitting honor to his many contributions to research and education in composites, and to his service to the technical community.”
Makeev is the Jenkins Garrett Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the director of the Advanced Materials and Structures Lab. He received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech, worked as the principal engineer managing risk analysis for Delta Air Lines, and continued his academic career in the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech, prior to joining UTA in 2011.
Makeev performs theoretical and experimental work sponsored by the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as the aerospace industry, including integration of design and manufacturing processes to improve performance of composites, advanced material technologies, material characterization, structural diagnostics, and prognostics.
His research results solve real-world challenges to enable and accelerate novel material development and implementation, improve aircraft safety, and produce lighter, more affordable and reliable aircraft components.
Lin earns American Society of Composites award
Shiyao Lin, an assistant professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington, has been named the 2026 winner of the American Society of Composites (ASC) Young Composites Researcher Award.

The ASC Young Composites Researcher Award is given to a member of the composites community who, early in their career, has made a significant impact on the science and technology of composite materials through a sustained research effort. Award winners must be under 35 years of age. Only one award is made each year.
Lin joined UTA in 2023. He is also a member of the Institute for Predictive Performance Methodologies research group at the UTA Research Institute. Before UTA, Lin was a senior failure analysis research and design engineer at Intel Corporation and a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Michigan.
