UTA professor writes the book on construction mechanics
As construction projects become increasingly sophisticated and technology-driven, a strong foundation in engineering mechanics remains essential for designing, building and maintaining safe infrastructure.
To help students connect fundamental principles with real-world construction applications, Vinayak Kaushal, associate professor and graduate advisor in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has published a new textbook, Construction Mechanics: Concepts and Applications.

Published by Cognella Academic Publishing, the first-edition textbook is designed for students in construction, civil, architectural and mechanical engineering programs. The book bridges the gap between foundational engineering theory and practical construction challenges by demonstrating how mechanics principles are applied in activities such as lifting operations, structural analysis and engineering decision-making.
"My goal was to develop a resource that helps students understand not only the mathematical foundations of mechanics, but also how these concepts are applied every day on construction projects," Dr. Kaushal said. "By emphasizing real-world examples and structured problem-solving approaches, the book helps students develop the technical and professional skills needed for success in engineering and construction careers."
Unlike many traditional mechanics textbooks, Construction Mechanics: Concepts and Applications places a strong emphasis on construction applications and engineering workflows. The book encourages students to develop professional habits such as dimensional consistency checks, systematic problem-solving methods, and the effective use of free-body diagrams, helping them connect classroom concepts with field and design-office practice.
The publication reflects Kaushal's longstanding commitment to advancing engineering education and preparing the next generation of construction professionals. A licensed professional engineer in Texas, Kaushal focuses his research on infrastructure intelligence for sustainable and resilient civil infrastructure systems, particularly underground infrastructure and trenchless technologies. Throughout his academic career, he has authored more than 130 scholarly publications and has secured over $1.8 million in research funding through collaborations with partners across the United States and internationally.
