Bachelor of Arts in English

The Bachelor of Arts in English offers a flexible curriculum that spans literature, language, creative writing, technical and professional writing, and rhetoric. Students engage with texts from the origins of the English language to the present while developing skills in writing, analysis, research, and communication.

Coursework in the English program emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to interpret and present complex ideas. Internships and applied learning opportunities provide students with practical experience and exposure to professional environments.

Graduates with a BA in English may pursue careers as content creators, content managers, creative writers, document designers, editors, educators, administrators, grant writers, instructional designers, librarians, nonprofit directors, public relations specialists, publications managers, and technical communicators. Some career paths— such as law, teaching, paralegal studies, technical writing, and academia—may require additional education, certification, or specialized training.

UTA offers two certificate options in the undergraduate English department.

The BA in English with Secondary Teacher Certification requires 120 credit hours, with training in English Studies as well as a curriculum in pedagogy and clinical student teaching through the College of Education. Upon completing the program and passing the state-administered secondary teacher certification examination, graduates will be certified to teach 7th-12th grades in Texas schools.

The Technical and Professional Writing Certificate is a 12-credit program that prepares students for careers in technical writing, user experience, content creation, and related fields.
