UTA Police Department honored for National Night Out event
The University of Texas at Arlington and the UTA Police Department have been recognized by the National Association of Town Watch for their participation in the National Night Out campaign. UTA is one of only five colleges or universities to receive the honor.
All five collegiate award winners are from Texas. According to NATW, National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign to promote relationships between neighborhoods and law-enforcement.
This is the fifth consecutive year that UTA has been recognized for its National Night Out efforts.
UTA Police Capt. Mike McCord said UTA’s ability to establish and advance partnerships, both on campus and off, was key to the success of the event.
“We’re able to provide important public safety information and have meaningful interactions with the UTA community all while enjoying food and fun,” said McCord.
UTA’s National Night Out celebration is held annually on the first Tuesday in October. This year’s event included over 15 community sponsors, a food drive benefitting Mission Arlington, door prizes and mini-games and approximately 1,500 attendees.
The UTA Police Department is known for using innovative platforms to reach students and the community. In October, the department was recognized by the UT System as the 2016 Pacesetter Police Department of the Year.
This summer, the department collaborated with University Communications to produce a safety video for students playing Pokémon GO. The video received over 109,000 views on Facebook.
