Smart bandage
Two UTA faculty advisers – Engineering Professors Panos Shiakolas and Pranesh Aswath – supervised a student team led by Letia Blanco, who is now a lead engineer at Raytheon, in designing and building a smart bandage which has now been patented, ScienMag, Phys.org and Medical Product Outsourcing Online reported.
Illegal voting
Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, was interviewed by the Star-Telegram about the decision to indict former felon Crystal Mason for illegally voting in the 2016 presidential election. It’s “very likely the government is sending a stern message about illegal voting,” Saxe said.
Bush's paintings
Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, was interviewed by San Antonio-based KTSA 107.1 FM about former President George W. Bush’s painting hobby. “From what I can see as an amateur it looks pretty good,” Saxe said.
Business numbers increase
The UTA College of Business recently reached a major milestone: a five-year high for spring enrollment this semester at the business school, MetroMBA reported. Between the spring of 2016 and the most recent semester, enrollment jumped from 5,224 to 5,822 students.
Vest impact
Kent Kerley, chair in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at UTA, was interviewed by KXAS NBC 5 about the decision to order heavy-duty armored vests for hundreds of Dallas police offices. Kerley said departments must balance protection with perception."Having most of your officers walking around in what appears to be SWAT uniforms, military style uniforms could be very off-putting to the public," Kerley said.
West Side Story
UTA’s Maverick Theatre Company presents West Side Story through Sunday at the Maverick Activities Center, CultureMap Fort Worth reported.
Video game engines
UTA student John Jackson, who is working on gaming engines, was interviewed by Beaumont, Texas-based KBMT NBC DT2 about the gaming industry in Texas.
Men's team wins
Jalen Jones shot 9 for 12 and scored 23 points in 27 minutes as UTA’s Maverick men’s basketball team pulled away from Louisiana-Monroe after halftime for a 72-57 win on Thursday night, USA Today and many other media outlets reported.
Alumnus featured
UTA alumnus Michael Tracy, faculty coordinator for the East Carolina University GlasStation in Farmville, N.C., will discuss the history of glass at a new exhibit titled "Louis C. Tiffany: Art and Innovation," about the stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany, the New Bern Sun-Journal reported.

UTA alumnus and architect Porter Fuqua is relaunching historic Dallas-based Casci Plaster, PaperCity reported.
