Commencement record
UTA graduated the largest class in its history last week, KTVT CBS 11 reported. About 5,600 graduates received their degrees.
Coral reef protection
Laura Mydlarz, a UTA associate professor of biology, was featured in a story on WJBK Fox 2 in Detroit about how she is leading a team of scientists to explore new ways to protect coral reefs from disease.
Cap design
Graduating psychology major Ana Rios-Amaro’s design of her graduation cap was featured on the Facebook page of Hoy Dallas. The design, which was dedicated to her parents, read: “My parents crossed the border so I could cross the stage.”
Scholarship money
The Killeen Daily Herald ran a story about 66 high school seniors in a college preparatory class who raised $2 million in scholarship money. The seniors include Landen Gray, who is headed to UTA.
Alumna featured
Diamond White, who received a master's of social work degree from UTA last week, was featured in The Vindicator.
Driverless tech
UTA’s campus is one of the areas in Arlington that will be testing out driverless technology, according to Government Technology magazine.

UTA Libraries was the source of several photos used in a CBS News story about the murders that took place in the Davis Mansion in Fort Worth in 1976.
Alumna initiated
Jill Blaha was recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at UTA, according to the Waco Tribune.
Nursing alumna
Sonia Garza, who received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from UTA in 2015, was featured in a story in the Laredo Morning Times and the San Antonio Express-News about how she’s helping one of her former college instructors through rehabilitation. The instructor was in a car accident.
Alumnus named superintendent
George McFarland has been named superintendent of Sweetwater Independent School District, according to the Abilene Reporter-News. McFarland received his master’s degree at UTA.
Editor stepping down
Andy Adams, editor of The Lufkin News, is stepping down this week to take a position as a high school yearbook advisor, the Lufkin Daily News reported.
Trump talk
Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, was interviewed on WTKS 104.1 FM in Orlando, Fla., about the media’s treatment of President Trump. He said the media was much kinder in its treatment of President Obama.
