Planetary evolution

New research from UTA and the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology suggest hydrogen, oxygen, water and carbon dioxide are being generated in the earth's mantle hundreds of kilometers below the earth's surface, Phys.org, ScienceDaily, Geology Page, Health Medicine Network, Science Newsline and other media outlets reported. The discovery shows how earth’s planetary evolution may have happened. Asish Basu, UTA professor of earth and environmental sciences, co-authored a cover paper in Geology publishing the results of the research.

Hyper-resolution modeling

D.J. Seo, a professor in UTA's Civil Engineering Department, will use a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration grant to use hyper-resolution modeling for the National Water Model locally in Arlington and Grand Prairie, Scienmag reported.

Brainstorming

Paul Paulus, UTA Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Psychology, was featured in a Harvard Business Review article. The article probed Paulus’ research on how to improve brainstorming results.

Impact of parent staying home

Quartz reported on how to evaluate the impact of a parent leaving the workforce to raise a family. The article quoted Christy Spivey, UTA associate clinical professor in the College of Business, who analyzed historical data about just how much families could lose if a parent stays home.

Technology opportunities

Kelly Davis, University of Texas at Arlington chief financial officer, was featured in a Dallas Business Journal article about what opportunities technology brings to an urban research university like UTA. Davis, who has been at UTA for 20 years, said analytics could help guide the University into a real, futuristic plan. Davis is a finalist for the Dallas Business Journal's 2017 CFO of the Year Award.

Summit planned

Life science experts will meet at the bionorthTX Third Annual iC3 Life Science Summit at UTA on Oct. 12, WVUE Fox 8 in New Orleans, La., WICU NBC 12 in Erie, Pa. and several other media outlets reported.

Most innovative

Dallas Innovates reported that UTA, as a part of the UT System, made Reuter’s list of the world’s most innovative universities. It lauded UTA’s newly opened Conrad Greer Lab, which converts natural gas to high-grade diesel and jet fuel, and a team of UTA grads who received a patent on a smart bandage.

Flexible transistor

An engineering team has created the most functional flexible transistor in the world, Kurzweil.net, Collective Intelligence and several other media outlets reported. Weidong Zhou, UTA electrical engineering professor, is a part of that team.

Zinc supplement

Zinc supplements can significantly inhibit the proliferation of esophageal cancer cells, according to a new study co-authored by Zui Pan, an associate professor of nursing in UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Newsweek, News-Medical Drug Discovery & Development Magazine and ProHealth reported. The finding was published this month in The FASEB Journal, the official journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.

Alumna honored

UTA alumna Darlene Hunter received ESPNW’s Toyota Everyday Hero Award for her work with the Lady Movin’ Mavs, ESPN.com reported. Hunter earned her Master’s in Social Work from UTA in 2006. The Everyday Hero Award is given to three individuals per year who are promoting and creating opportunities for women and girls in sports.

Alumnus' works featured

Stephen Wagner is one of the artists bringing his works to Predicament or Crossroads, a Desta Gallery event, in California, MarinScope Community Newspapers reported. Wagner earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UTA in painting and graphic communication.

Accounting graduate promoted

Darla Ramirez was named interim financial officer for Pier 1 Imports Inc., Crossroads Today and many other media outlets reported. Ramirez earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UTA.

Space traveler

Space tourist, innovator and entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari was listed as the next speaker in UTA’s Maverick Speaker Series, The Dallas Morning News reported yesterday. Ansari spoke last night at Texas Hall.

UTA tops among veterans

Military Times ranks The University of Texas at Arlington and other Texas universities tops among veterans, the Houston Chronicle reported in a story about an All-Texas Veteran Higher Education Symposium starting this week.

Amazon options

UT Dallas and Richardson are organizing an effort to land Amazon’s second headquarters, The Dallas Morning News reported. In the article, it said UTD created a mechanical engineering department with UTA less than 10 years ago.
