Rise A Capella

KTVT CBS 11 and the United Kingdom’s One News Page reported on UTA’s Rise A Capella, a student group that appeared in an online commercial for Cheerios and Walmart. The students recently also qualified for the semifinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella to be held March 31 in Phoenix, Ariz. The group has started a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of the Arizona trip.

New positions

Curtis Andressen, a seasoned administrator with more than three decades of higher education experience, is joining UTA as vice provost for international affairs, NewsEdge.com reported. In addition, Ashley Purgason has been named associate vice provost of student success at UTA.

Primaries analyzed

Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, predicted on KRLD 1080 AM that national talk of Texas turning Democrat is happening way too soon. He said the fall 2018 election will come closer to determining whether Texas will switch over to more of a Democrat Party leaning. Saxe also appeared on KDFW FOX 4 and KXAS NBC 5. He said changing demographics in the state are more of a reason for a shift than negative feelings about President Trump. NBCDFW.com also ran the story.

Runoff in crowded race

Tom Marshall, UTA professor of political science, said openings in Congress are rare, the Star-Telegram reported in a story about runoffs after a crowded 6th Congressional District race. “Increasingly, once members of Congress are elected, they stay there a long time,” Marshall said. Garage opening

UTA will celebrate the opening of its new West Campus Parking Garage today, reported KXAS NBC 5. The opening of the 1,500-space parking garage at the corner of West Nedderman Drive and UTA Boulevard marks the completion of the first phase of a large west campus redevelopment project. A new residence hall and student dining complex will open in August.

Environmental topics

Research on polarizing environmental topics requires more than just analytical chemistry, said Kevin Schug, Shimadzu Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry in UTA's Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, in a Chromatography Online LCGC column.

Genome center

The University of Texas at Arlington, in partnership with the University of North Texas Health Science Center, is bringing genome sequencing capabilities to North Texas through the launch of the North Texas Genome Center housed on the UTA campus, D Healthcare and the Fort Worth Business Press reported.

Heart of Arlington

The Heart of Arlington Neighborhood Association, which includes UTA, was featured on the ArlingtonTX.com Meet The Neighbors web and video program. PublicNow.com also carried the story.

Alumna appointed

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has appointed Stephanie Lassanske, a Tyler Junior College professor, to the Social Work Field of Study Advisory Committee, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported. Lassanske earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in social work from UTA.

Former softball player

KRIS NBC 6 featured Cheryl Fillmore during Women’s History Month. Fillmore, a local teacher, counselor and coach, also was an athlete in the West Oso school district. Fillmore played softball at UTA.

Korean professors workshop

Korea Daily reported on a workshop UTA held for Korean professors in Texas. The keynote speaker was Hyejin Moon, a UTA associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Shepard appointed

Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Janelle Shepard of Weatherford to the Texas Woman’s University Board of Regents, U.S. Fed News reported. Shepard, who is senior director of population health for Texas Health Resources, received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from UTA.

UTA student featured

UTA senior Richmond Escarlan was featured on a KXAS NBC 5 story about how the city of Arlington is revamping Abram Street through downtown.

Professor on panel

Arne Winguth, UTA associate professor of earth and environmental sciences, will serve on a panel at the North Texas Climate Change Symposium on March 9 in Dallas, U.S. Fed News reported.

Diverse communities

Five diverse activists, journalists and educators will explore whether the media fairly and accurately covers diverse communities in a free program at UTA Saturday, The Dallas Morning News reported.
