Robotic smart skin
UTA has patented a smart skin, created by Zeynep Çelik-Butler, a UTA electrical engineering professor, that gives robots more sensitive tactile feeling than humans, Wireless Design Magazine, Science & Enterprise Magazine, R&D Magazine, the Namibian Sun, New Atlas, Techstory, Printed Electronics World and many other media outlets reported.
Cache efficiency
Song Jiang, a UTA associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is working on a National Science Foundation program that will make accessing data more efficient, Phys.org, Dallas Innovates and iConnece007.com reported.
UTA/DART celebration
The UTA/DART Transportation Leadership Academy commemorated the program's successful inaugural year Thursday night with a celebration at the Dallas Tower Club, NewsEdge.com reported.
Preservation addressed
Dallas’ 10th Street neighborhood, one of the last historic freedman towns, is undergoing change as public and economic development projects take place, The Dallas Morning News reported in an article about the changing area. Kathryn Holliday, a UTA architectural historian and associate professor in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs, said she believes historic preservation is often viewed as an impediment to economic development, but is really a tool for it.
Bring back home economics
The educational system needs to bring back home economics classes, wrote Marti Harvey, a UTA communication lecturer, in an op-ed piece for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and HeraldNet.com in Everett, Wash. The original column ran in The Dallas Morning News. She said classes like home economics would better prepare students for the real world.
Panel discussion
Ryon Cobb, UTA assistant professor in the School of Social Work, has been named to a discussion panel for a Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture event later this month, PressReleasePoint.com reported. The discussion kicks off a six-part series titled "gOD-Talk: A Black Millennials and Faith Conversation Series" and will be held at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. The series is in partnership with the Pew Research Center.
Trump influence
Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, said in a WBAP 820 AM interview that one of the reasons the Republicans are leading a tight Ohio congressional special election is because of President Trump’s influence and stumping in that election. The race is still too close to call, but the Republican candidate holds about a 1,500 vote lead.
Alumnus named interim dean
Zephyrinus Okonkwo was named interim dean to Albany State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, New York’s Albany Herald reported. Okonkwo earned his doctorate in mathematics from UTA.
