Assisting older adults with transportation

A UTA multidisciplinary team of engineers and social workers is using a national grant to improve transportation for older adults living in assisted-living communities across the Dallas area, Engineering Business Daily reported. Kate Hyun, assistant professor of civil engineering, is leading the project. Kathy Lee, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, and Caroline Krejci, assistant professor of industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering, are on the research team as well.

Several programs ranked

UTA’s master’s program in public administration in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs also was ranked among the top 50 in the country by Intelligent.com, Maryland’s WBOC CBS 16 and the People’s Daily reported. The UTA electrical engineering program was ranked among the nation’s best 59 programs in the nation, Ohio’s WFMJ NBC 21 reported. In addition, Intelligent.com named UTA one of the nation’s top universities for earning a construction management degree, WBOC CBS 16 reported. Finally, Intelligent.com named UTA as having one of the best master’s in social work programs in the country.

Das named fellow

Gautam Das, associate dean for research in UTA’s College of Engineering, has been named a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Dallas Innovates, Scienmag, 7thSpace and U.S. Fed News reported.

Social work professor discusses elder abuse

Karen Magruder, UTA assistant professor in practice in the School of Social Work, participated in an ask-the-experts column about elder abuse with WalletHub. She said education of family members on the various frauds and scams that target seniors is an important step in prevention.

Nursing graduate

Fatima Barker always wanted to be a nurse and will graduate next week with a bachelor’s of science in nursing degree from UTA, U.S. Fed News reported in a mini-profile on her.

Governor names alumna to committee

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Leah Gamble as a member of the Texas Poet Laureate, State Musician and State Artists Committee, U.S. Fed News reported. Gamble earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UTA.

Alumna honored

Wendy Okolo was honored as a distinguished recent graduate of UTA, Legit reported. Okolo was the first black woman to obtain a doctoral degree in aerospace engineering from UTA.
