UTA Paralympian plays for Australia 

John McPhail, a 2015 graduate from UT Arlington, is currently playing for the Australian Men's Wheelchair Basketball Team in the Tokyo Paralympics, NBC 5 reported. UTA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach Doug Garner said he knew McPhail was Olympic material when he played for UTA's Movin' Mavs. McPhail’s wife, Jillian, also spoke with the media outlet saying "There's no prouder moment than to know that my husband is there right now."

Barry Dowd

Barry Dowd, who served as the head basketball coach at UT Arlington from 1966-76, passed away at his home in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was 85 years old, Sports Illustrated reported. Despite playing at UT Austin for three seasons, Dowd's greatest impact to the game came as a coach. Before his time as coach at UT Arlington he played at UT Austin for three seasons. After his time at UTA, he returned to Austin as an assistant coach.

Understanding human cells

Piya Ghose, UTA assistant professor of biology, will use a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study roundworms in hopes of understanding cell death processes in humans, Disease Prevention Daily reported. Such knowledge could lead to improved therapies to treat a variety of conditions in humans, including cancer and neurological injuries.
