Remembering Jacqueline Pokuaa

Vigils and a moment of silence are being planned for two women killed at Methodist Dallas Medical Center over the weekend, one of them a UTA alum. Social worker Jacqueline Pokuaa, 45, and nurse Katie Flowers, 63, were shot and killed by a man who was there for the birth of his child, according to police and the hospital. Pokuaa received her Master of Social Work with specialization in mental health and substance abuse in 2019 from UT Arlington, WFAA, FOX 4, NBC 5, The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Texas Teacher of the Year

UTA alum and Irving school district teacher Shelley Jeoffroy was named 2023 Texas Teacher of the Year, The Dallas Morning News reported. Jeoffroy has been an educator for 17 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and biology from UTA, where she also attended graduate school.

VP of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion

Jewel Washington will lead UT Arlington's efforts to support a diverse and inclusive workplace as its first vice president for talent, culture and inclusion, U.S. Fed News reported. In this inaugural position, she will lead the University's efforts to establish a new Office of Talent, Culture, and Inclusion, which will merge the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with human resources.
