Epilepsy help
Christos Papadelis, a UTA bioengineering professor of research, and his doctoral student, Ludovica Corona, have discovered how to identify which brain cells lead to epileptic episodes in children, KXAS NBC 5, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Medical Xpress, U.S. Fed News and CSN TV reported. They have written a paper published in Brain, a highly touted scientific journal. The study, “Non-invasive mapping of epileptogenic networks predicts surgical outcome,” is supported by UT Arlington and Cook Children’s Health Care System and funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and was produced in collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Cavallo honored
The American Association for the Advancement of Science council named Ann Cavallo, UTA assistant vice provost, a fellow for her distinguished contributions to the advancement of science education, particularly for STEM teachers, regionally and nationally, Dallas Innovates reported.
Bridge redesign
Student design teams from The University of Texas at Arlington shared their visions on Feb. 11 for the future of the Cooper Street pedestrian bridges as part of a competition to reimagine what are among the University's most recognizable landmarks, U.S. Fed News reported.
Public input needed
UT Arlington’s Smart Coast Initiative is expanding its reach in the Coastal Bend to Port Aransas, the Port Aransas South Jetty reported. The effort has been going on for the past five years, and the group has engaged in several projects around Corpus Christi Bay. The group’s goal is to assist communities and decision-makers in developing future strategies to address issues such as natural and manmade disasters.
Bill would eliminate on-campus voting
Carrie Isaac, a state representative from Hays County south of Austin, is proposing that college campuses no longer be used as voting places during elections, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. The legislation would bar county commissioners from designating voting sites at colleges or universities starting Sept. 1. There were 3,525 early vote ballots cast on UT Arlington campus in the November election, according to Tarrant County records.
Lu named senior member
The National Academy of Inventors has named Frank Lu, a UT Arlington professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, as a senior member, Targeted News Service reported.
