The following colleges/majors require the ALEKS math assessment:
- College of Engineering
- College of Science
- Architecture majors
ALEKS scores will impact your schedule and ability to register for classes, so take the test carefully and seriously. Keep in mind that not having ALEKS scores on file will prevent you from enrolling in some courses. You should take ALEKS at least two weeks before your virtual group advising session. This will allow enough time for your score to be loaded into MyMav. Please note that ALEKS is a separate assessment from the TSI test. Additionally, ALEKS is required for domestic and international students.
The best part about ALEKS is that if you score lower than expected, you can take modules based on your specific pattern of wrong answers. After you complete the modules, you can retake ALEKS and see if you qualify for a higher-level math course. You can take ALEKS up to 5 times. Keep in mind that your pathway to graduation will look different depending on if you place into College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, or Calculus. It may also take you longer to graduate, which is completely fine. Your ALEKS score impacts non-math courses as well, as your math foundation can impact your other major courses.
If you are waiting on AP/IB scores, you should take ALEKS anyway. Waiting until July to take ALEKS will only further delay your registration process and put you at risk for not getting the classes you need this fall—especially if you don’t score as high as you’d’ like to.
