The Department of History is pleased to announce that our longtime colleague and friend Dr. Robert Fairbanks was named Professor Emeritus on October 5, 2021. Bob Fairbanks joined the Department of History in 1983. He spent his career nurturing students and maintaining a very active research agenda while serving as a founding member of the field of urban history. Known for his popularity among students and colleagues alike, Dr. Fairbanks has also become well-known outside of the academic community; because of his deep knowledge of the Dallas-Fort Worth region’s history, Bob has often been called upon to serve as an expert commentator for local news organizations and court officials. In his capacity as a Department member, he served as Chair from 2006 to 2011, and was a staunch contributor to History’s Championship softball team, the Wayback Machine. Most importantly, he was an active and invested member of the UTA community, one we sorely miss but for whom we are so incredibly happy. Congratulations, Professor Emeritus Fairbanks!
