Q: What inspired you to pursue social work?
A: I am motivated by helping others succeed in their overall health and wellness, particularly those from at-risk and vulnerable populations. I love supporting individuals as they work toward their goals and seeing them thrive. I am also deeply interested in studying populations, cultures, and how environments affect people, while honoring and preserving the full complexity of each community.

Q: How has receiving this scholarship impacted your education or life at UTA?
A: I am both honored and humbled to receive this scholarship. I worked hard to maintain a strong academic record as an undergraduate at the University of New Mexico, where I graduated summa cum laude and was active in honor societies, leadership roles, and research. As a graduate student at UTA, this support affirms my efforts and allows me to stay focused on my academic and professional growth as I pursue my MSW in Mental Health.

Q: What are your career goals after graduation?
A: I currently work for State of Texas agencies and bring more than fifteen years of experience in research and program work. After graduation, I hope to continue expanding a wellness plan I began developing as an undergraduate. I also look forward to providing therapy to individuals seeking to improve their mental health, wellness, and overall outcomes.

As she continues her graduate studies at UTA, Monica is building on a strong foundation of academic achievement and professional experience. Through her focus on mental health, wellness and culturally responsive practice, she is preparing to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals and communities. Her journey reflects the School of Social Work’s commitment to developing skilled, compassionate professionals who are ready to support healing, resilience and long-term well-being.
