The CARE Fund at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work provides essential financial support to students facing unexpected hardships, helping them remain enrolled and focused on their academic goals.

Established to address urgent needs, the fund assists with expenses such as housing, food, transportation and other basic necessities. These challenges, while often temporary, can create significant barriers for students pursuing a degree. The CARE Fund serves as a safety net, offering timely relief so students can continue their education without disruption.

“At one point, I was at risk of having my electricity disconnected. This support helped me keep my lights on and gave me relief during a very stressful time. It reminded me that I’m not alone,” one student shared.

In addition to emergency assistance, the CARE Fund can also provide support for tuition and conference participation, ensuring students not only stay enrolled but remain engaged in the full academic and professional experience.

The initiative is a central focus of MavsDay, UTA’s annual 24-hour giving campaign that brings together alumni, faculty, staff and supporters to invest in programs across the university. While many colleges and departments designate gifts toward scholarships or research, the School of Social Work directs all MavsDay contributions to the CARE Fund, underscoring its commitment to student well-being and success.

“By donating to the CARE Funddonors are participating in the mission social workers undertake every day across the country,” Tejada said. “The mission of social work is to help those in need, whether financially, mentally, through health or any other hardship. Aligning with that mission, the CARE Fund directly supports students in need.”

Beyond immediate financial assistance, the CARE Fund reflects the broader values of the social work professionservice, empathy and community support. By helping students overcome personal and financial obstacles, the fund ensures they can continue their education and prepare to serve vulnerable populations.

The CARE Fund not only meets urgent needs but also strengthens the pipeline of future social workers dedicated to making a meaningful impact in their communities.
