CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF HELPING OUR UTA COMMUNITY OF FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND NONPROFIT AGENCIES!
Welcome to the Center for Service Learning! Here you will find numerous resources to assist as you engage in service learning at The University of Texas at Arlington. Since its beginning in the fall of 2001, CSL has empowered many faculty and students to experience the power of collaboration with community partners through their coursework.
What is Service Learning?
Service learning integrates community service into academic coursework, whereby students engage in classroom activities and reflection related to the performance of local service projects within the course.
More than a volunteer opportunity, service learning benefits both the student and the community partner through reciprocity of needs, which furthers the students' educational goals while promoting civic responsibility.
From focused collaboration with classmates and the community partner, to practical, real-world application, along with reflection and assessment, the learning process becomes a much richer and more well-rounded experience.

We're excited to host...
Service Learning Workshop with Dr. Marybeth Lima - My life as an engaged scholar: How a simple idea got big and complicated in the best ways
Join us at our service learning workshop with Dr. Marybeth Lima, Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department Chair at LSU. We’re thrilled to bring her back to campus (virtually) to share her 20+ year journey in service-learning and civic engagement in engineering through the LSU Community Playground Project, a cooperative effort in planning and building playgrounds with local communities. This real-world insight is a bonus for connecting what is taught in the engineering classroom to students’ future success.
Friday, April 9, 2021 10am-noon RSVP: https://common.forms.uta.edu/view.php?id=752106
Participants will gain insight into navigating obstacles, how to turn a no into a yes, and will be encouraged to construct their own stories of engagement. Participants will also learn a little about assessment and promotion and tenure efforts in service-learning and civic engagement.
With so much emphasis on the Maverick Advantage experiential program as it relates to student success, in addition to the new Maverick Advantage Faculty Engagement Program within CRTLE, this workshop will give your faculty some real-like examples of how to tie coursework with student critical thinking skills, as well as their own research opportunities.

Faculty Fellows Program
The Faculty Fellows program is a semester-long program for any full-time UTA faculty interested in integrating service learning into their courses. In a series of monthly seminars, conducted both on campus and at area nonprofit agencies, faculty examine the academic and institutional origins of service learning, pedagogical best practices, and possibilities of combining service learning and research.
Collegiality is one of the highlights of the Faculty Fellows experience. Faculty meet, discuss, and share in small group settings to nurture their growth in service to their community and knowledge of the process, within a mentoring environment. Through this interaction, Faculty Fellows form sustainable partnerships and supportive networks, and have opportunities to engage in collaborative, community-based research and scholarship.
