Nursing research symposium at UTA to feature leading scientists
The Delta Theta chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing will host the “Science and Health Innovation: Advancing Clinical Practice Research Symposium” on Saturday, April 22, 8:00 a.m. - 5 p.m., at The University of Texas at Arlington.
The event, which will be held in UTA’s E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St., Arlington, will focus on interpreting the influences of research findings on chronic disease outcomes.
“This symposium is a rich combination of cutting edge basic science and translational research,” said Anne Bavier, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation. “This is a great opportunity for science researchers from throughout the region to learn about the research projects of their peers, strengthen their understanding of translational research and network with their peers.”
The event will feature three prominent nursing scholars:
- Kaye Herth, a respected international scholar on hope and dean emerita at Minnesota State University. Herth’s work on hope and humor in the chronically and terminally ill being translated into 28 languages. She will discuss “Research to Practice: The Journey”
- Janet Pierce, a professor in the University of Kansas School of Nursing and adjunct faculty member at KU’s school of medicine’s department of integrative and molecular physiology. Her research interests include mechanisms for reducing cellular damage in traumatic brain injury and she will speak on “Traumatic Brain Injury: From Bench to Bedside”
- Dr. Mari Tietze, a professor at Texas Woman’s University’s College of Nursing, teaches informatics courses focused on collaborative practice. She is a former director of nursing informatics for the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council Foundation and will speak on “Accessing and Using Big Data for Population Health”
In addition, there will be presentations from numerous faculty members from UTA’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation, including:
- Mark Haykowsky, the college’s Moritz chair of gerontology nursing and an expert in exercise physiology;
- Marco Brotto, the college’s George W. and Hazel M. Jay professor and expert in bone density;
- Zui Pan, an associate professor of nursing science and esophageal cancer expert.
- Jon Weidanz, UTA’s associate professor of research, will also give a presentation.
The symposium is open to members of the public. Admission is $50 for Sigma Theta Tau members and $75 for nonmembers. The symposium is free to the first 100 UTA students with Mav ID. Click here to learn more about the symposium or to register.
