School of Social Work ranks among nation's best

The University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Social Work has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading social work research programs, according to updated metrics from Academic Analytics.
The organization ranks UT Arlington’s program among the top 3% of social work programs in the United States for research productivity and scholarly impact. Academic Analytics benchmarks universities using faculty-level data, including grants, articles, clinical trials and awards.
Research at UTA’s School of Social Work addresses some of society’s most pressing challenges, including human trafficking, law enforcement-related issues, adolescent substance use and dementia in older adults.
Tonya Hansel, associate dean for research and professor, said the recognition reflects the faculty’s commitment to conducting research that creates meaningful, real-world impact.
What does it mean to be ranked among the top programs nationally by Academic Analytics?
Hansel: Social work research is about creating knowledge that improves lives. Our faculty are committed to conducting research that not only advances knowledge but creates meaningful change in communities and brings innovation into the classroom. This recognition reflects that impact.
How does the research conducted at UTA translate into real-world impact?
Hansel: By examining patterns and outcomes across diverse communities, we generate reliable evidence that informs decisions by policymakers, organizations and practitioners. Many of society's most pressing challenges—including mental health, education, public health, workforce development, aging, disaster recovery and community resilience—exist within environments of limited resources. Through knowledge generation, evaluation, implementation science and translational research, we bridge the gap between discovery and practice.
How do students benefit from being part of a top-ranked research program?
Hansel: Students benefit by learning in an environment where knowledge is actively being created, tested and applied. They’re exposed to emerging trends and evidence shaping the future of social work. A strong research environment also provides opportunities for students to engage directly in the research process through assistantships, independent projects, community partnerships and faculty mentorship. These experiences help students develop critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, program evaluation and problem-solving. Ultimately, students graduate with more than knowledge of current best practices; they gain the ability to evaluate evidence, adapt to emerging challenges and contribute to meaningful change in the communities they serve.
What sets UTA apart from other programs?
Hansel: What sets us apart is our combination of scale, research excellence and community impact. Located in the heart of Dallas–Fort Worth, we’re in a unique position to address emerging challenges in one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions. As one of the largest schools of social work in the country, we play a vital role in developing the workforce that serves North Texas and beyond. Our faculty work closely with community partners to generate knowledge and address real-world challenges.
What current and future research projects excite you the most?
Hansel: What excites me is the strength and diversity of our research ecosystem. Through centers such as the Child Welfare Research Center and the Center for Addiction and Recovery Studies, as well as laboratories including the Social Networks for Social Good Lab, Preventing and Intervening on Violence Over Time (PIVOT) Lab, Studying Alcohol and Related Risks (STARR) Lab and the Emotional Robotics Living Lab, we’re exploring innovative approaches to understand human behavior, strengthen communities and improve service delivery. I’m also particularly excited about the growing work in educational innovation—how technology, experiential learning and community engagement can enhance workforce readiness and prepare graduates for increasingly complex practice environments. Together, this work reflects our commitment to advancing knowledge, improving practice and preparing the next generation of social work leaders.
