Invasion of Ukraine
Brent Sasley, UTA associate professor of political science, says prohibiting Russian musicians from competing in this summer’s Van Cliburn International Piano Competition would not matter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Fort Worth Report. “He believes that Ukraine is part of Russia. He believes that this is what Russia should be,” Sasley said. “It’s a great power and therefore it should recapture its territories and have its own sphere of influence in the area. And nothing is going to force him to change his mind.” The Cliburn recently announced Russian-born pianists will be allowed to audition for a spot in the competition.
