Women’s rights activist

Roshan Mashal, a fellow with The University of Texas at Arlington’s Women's and Gender Studies program, was featured in the Fort Worth Report detailing her journey and life’s work. For over a decade, Mashal has advocated for women’s and gender issues, access to education and participation in elections in Afghanistan. Mashal—who says her goals have always included sharing experiences and learning from others—will speak at UT Arlington at an event about journalism, women’s rights issues and advocacy.

“Kinfolk House”

WFAA featured a project created by UTA Associate Professor Sedrick Huckaby and his wife, Letitia: “Kinfolk House”, a collaborative space situated in his grandmother’s former home in the Polytechnic Heights neighborhood of Fort Worth. The purpose of “Kinfolk House” is to provide a venue in a traditionally underserved community that can host creative projects and collaboration. “Art is for every place,” Huckaby said. “Art doesn’t have to be segregated to just the arts district."

Dr. Theron L. Bowman

The city of Arlington dedicated the South District Service Center in honor of former Police Chief and Deputy City Manager Dr. Theron L. Bowman. Bowman, who became the city’s first African American police chief in 1999, was recognized for his work during his 34-year career to champion diversity, education, innovation and process improvements, professionalism, and strong community partnerships. Bowman received a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in public administration and, in 1997, a doctoral degree in urban and public administration from The University of Texas at Arlington.

National champs

College Basketball Times featured the UTA Movin’ Mavs’, the men’s wheelchair basketball team, efforts to win a national championship. The Movin’ Mavs men’s team won its 10th National Wheelchair Basketball Association title earlier this month. “It doesn’t surprise me. Nothing against anybody else, but that’s what we’re here to do,” said Movin’ Mavs Head Coach Doug Garner.

RAPID one-year anniversary

Arlington RAPID, an on-demand, autonomous vehicle service, launched a year ago and is already planning for an expanded operation, Government Technology magazine reported. The program is the first in the United States to integrate on-demand, autonomous vehicles into an existing public transportation service. It has provided more than 28,000 trips in its first year to residents, university students, and visitors around downtown and The University of Texas at Arlington campus.
