Office of Advising and Student Retention

Academic Advisors at the University of Texas at Arlington guide students through exploration, identification, and pursuit of their educational, personal and career goals. Advisors equip students to attain academic success and promote lifelong learning. Ultimately, academic advisors offer essential academic services that help students persist and graduate.

How to Prepare for Advising

Why Get Advised?

  • To help you stay on track and graduate on time.
  • Our advisors are social workers themselves and have practiced in the field. They offer much insight into planning your social work career!
  • Our academic advisors can help you with planning your academics, and also connect you to any resources you might need to be successful in the program.
  • If your GPA is a 3.25 or higher, you do not need to meet with your advisor, but we still strongly encourage it!

How Often Should I Be Advised?

We recommend all students see their advisors at least once a semester.  In some cases, students are required to do so to remove academic holds that prevent registration.  Simply make an appointment using our online scheduling system by clicking on the link below your advisor's information.  Be sure to select the correct advisor to avoid a delay in your appointment.  Please arrive at your scheduled appointment time.  If you are 15 minutes late to your scheduled appointment, you will need to reschedule your appointment.

ACADEMIC ADVISING SAME DAY APPOINTMENT

Need to meet with your advisor but there's no upcoming appointment available, schedule a same-day appointment, either in-person or virtually, on Wednesdays. Remember, appointments are on a first come basis and the link only opens on Wednesdays at 9 AM.

POWER HOURS

Do you have general advising questions that don't require a full appointment?  Interested in meeting other SSW students but can't make it to campus? Looking to learn more about the Social Work profession? If this sounds like you, join your advisor during their Power Hour.  Their days/times are listed under their profile information.  Remember, you're not the only one in the session so this is not an advising appointment.  To schedule an appointment, use the links under your advisor's profile information.
