Starting in 1493: The Texas Disability History Collection

Wednesday, May 26, 2021

UTA Libraries Special Collections and the Disability Studies Minor partner to host regular open houses featuring the holdings of UTA Libraries’ award-winning Texas Disability History Collection. Here, Cartographic Archivist Ben Huseman holds up a 1493 map of the known world, which uses images of what we might today call “disability” and what was earlier often characterized as “monstrosity” to depict the imagined peoples at the edge of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The map is the oldest item in Special Collection’s holdings.
