The minor in Law and Legal Studies offers an interdisciplinary, liberal arts approach to the study of law. This is an academic program, not a professional training program, emphasizing the social, cultural and philosophical foundations and impacts of law and legal systems. It is designed for Pre-Law students and for a broad array of students from across the UTA campus who are interested in the relationship of law to society and culture.

What are the Minor Requirements?

  • You will be required to fulfill 18 hours of coursework in specialized areas including oral advocacy, advanced writing, experiential learning and legal studies electives.
  • You must have a 3.0 GPA and 30 hours of prior coursework completed before you can minor in Law and Legal Studies.
  • You must earn a C or better for the required courses to be counted towards the minor in Law and Legal Studies.

How Do I Add a Minor in Law and Legal Studies?

  • Complete and sign the Minor Approval Form and submit to Pre-Law Center Director Amber White (amber.white@uta.edu).
  • Contact Mrs. White for a meeting to discuss any additional questions you may have.
  • Minor will be available in the university academic catalog beginning Fall 2019.

    • Ability to think, reason, strategically adapt and effectively communicate positions and arguments in a way that leads to successful compromise/win-win scenarios for the benefit of self, individual, firm, or corporate client
  • Professional Writing Skills
    • Ability to break down and organize complex argument in a concise manner, effectively conveying critical information necessary for the success of a law firm, office or corporate environment.
  • Time Management Skills
    • Ability to handle multiple caseloads and balance deadlines in a fast-paced environment with changing conditions, timelines and information, while working efficiently to maintain quality and accuracy of work product. Ability to maintain focus and manage multiple projects and client needs to best suit organizational demands and goals.
  • Team Work & Interpersonal Communication Skills
    • Ability to work effective on cases with pairs or teams of individuals collectively tasked with achieving specific objectives while meeting client expectations and established firm/company goals. Ability to overcome and adapt to communication barriers that exist between team members and forsake personal interests in favor of the interest of the parties of the affected case or issue.
  • Critical Thinking & Analysis Skills
    • Ability to review and analyze complex written documents or case precedent, draw inferences, and make connections between arguments through legal analysis and logical reasoning skills accompanied by the ability to break down those complex concepts and explain them to lay or otherwise interested parties.
  • Leadership Skills
    • Ability to demonstrate situational awareness, manage relationships, develop networks, create and expand influence, inspire confidence and loyalty through established demonstrations of personal work ethic, and promote change where desired or necessary.
