Dance Minor
The Minor in Dance is intended for students who wish to broaden their knowledge and experience of dance as an art form. This program offers a variety of dance techniques, choreography, and theory courses to develop a well-rounded artist and scholar. Dance minors have connected their dance studies with exercise science, psychology, history, business, linguistics, political science, music, architecture, and theatre arts.
An audition for the dance minor is not required. However, students will be placed in appropriate dance technique courses based on their skill level through a video or in-person placement audition. Students interested in placing out of a level 1 technique course should contact the Dance Area Head. Students declaring the dance minor must be accepted into the university and be in good academic standing. The minor is intended to be completed in four semesters.
Maverick Dance Company directors, choreographers, and performers create works that range in style and concept with the aim to entertain, express, and engage. Students must be enrolled in a Dance Performance course (DNCE 1139 or DNCE 2139) to be considered for casting. Casting auditions are held the first full week of each semester during scheduled class times.
MDC presents two formal dance concerts each year, participates in on and off campus events, and has performed for film and in alternative sites. The company has performed on campus at the UTA Planetarium, UTA Art Gallery, The President’s Dinner, UTA’s Homecoming Parade, and has filmed in campus locations such as UTA’s Micro Houses, the Architecture Courtyard, and various natural landscapes. Off-campus performances include:
• American College Dance Association
• Fort Worth Fringe Festival
• Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
• Sundance Square Plaza Stage
• The Performance at Dance Co-op
• {254} Dance Festival
• Collin College
• Richland College
Company members may also choose to deepen their understanding of choreography with faculty mentoring and development of original creative works. Potential student choreographers must be enrolled in or have completed Dance Composition (DNCE 2238). In addition, they must have performed with MDC for at least two semesters or have director permission, be in good academic standing at the university, and submit a choreography proposal.
UTA’s Maverick Dance Company is available to perform at most events or venues. Please contact the department email, theatrearts@uta.edu , for more information.
All UTA students, regardless of their declared major or minor, can audition for Maverick Dance Company (MDC), a contemporary-based performance group that creates and presents new, progressive dance works for the concert stage. Dance students have additional opportunities each semester to audition for theatrical productions ranging from classic and modern musicals, plays, and other interdisciplinary projects such as dance for camera and dance in alternative venues. View the casting policy for additional details.
