Welcome to the UTA Department of Biology! The research and teaching faculty in our department engage in research, education, and outreach to help the campus community and the world understand the importance of global change, evolution, and genomics on biological processes.

The Department of Biology is one of the largest academic units at UTA. It provides interdisciplinary educational opportunities and research collaborations within the biological, mathematical, and physical sciences, as well as engineering. Our cross-disciplinary approach provides opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students to examine a variety of societal challenges in health and the human condition, sustainable communities, and global change.

Our research focus areas include comparative genomics, ecology & evolution, cell & developmental biology, and microbiology. Specialized research centers such as the Life Sciences Core Facility, the Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center, the Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies, and the North Texas Genome Center provide resources for our interdisciplinary research programs.

A DIVERSE EDUCATION DEVELOPS CRITICAL THINKING

Students are at the center of all that we do in the Department of Biology. As part of one of the largest departments at UTA, our diverse student groups engage in research and academics, and we offer a variety of degree programs. Undergraduate students investigate the biological sciences curriculum through first-year learning communities, where they explore the degree programs in Biology (B.A., B.S.), Microbiology (B.S.), and Medical Technology (B.S.), as well as minors in Chemistry/Biochemistry, Psychology, Business, Languages, and Bioengineering. Sophomore students have opportunities to participate in the ASSURE undergraduate research program, and our faculty provide research opportunities for undergraduates at all levels. The department also provides scholarship opportunities for several programs.

Graduate students can choose between master’s and doctoral degree programs in Quantitative Biology. Ph.D. students are supported through stipends, either as teaching (GTA) or research assistants (GRA).

Our research and teaching faculty are committed to investigating, educating, and disseminating solutions for grand challenges in science that affect our communities. In addition to our focus on research, we have an exceptional team of teaching faculty who are committed to student success by helping all students develop critical thinking skills through a better understanding of science.
