UTA student explores heart research in Chicago

For Rushika Muradi, a junior at The University of Texas at Arlington, a family experience sparked a passion for cardiovascular research that is now shaping her future career goals. Muradi took significant steps toward fulfilling her dream this summer as one of five students nationwide selected for the prestigious Cardio-SURPh summer research program at Loyola University Chicago.
“It was an incredible learning experience that allowed me to gain hands-on exposure to cardiovascular research and develop my research skills,” she said.
Muradi spent her summer working on heart failure research models under the guidance of experienced researchers and professionals. She even presented her research during a visit to Harvard University.
Muradi spoke about her experience and how UT Arlington continues to provide pathways for students to reach their goals.
How did you land at UTA?
Muradi: I was raised in Nanded, India. I’ve been curious about cardiovascular science and cardiology since childhood. My mom has been my biggest supporter, always encouraging and supporting me on this journey. When I came to UTA, I explored multiple options and learned about health care and cardiovascular internship programs.
What sparked your interest in cardiovascular research?

Muradi: I had a personal family experience with cardiovascular disease that inspired my interest in the field. When that moment happened, I felt like, “OK, this is a problem I want to help solve.” I thought, “Why not go into that field and explore something new that could be useful to many people?”
What was it like doing the internship at Loyola Chicago and visiting Harvard?
Muradi: It was my first time traveling outside Texas in the U.S. and exploring a city like Chicago. Then we got to go to Boston. First, I had the opportunity to visit Harvard and give a lightning talk about my research experience. Following that, I attended the American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions, where I had the opportunity to present my research again. The two experiences were major highlights of my summer.
Did you like the deep-dish pizza in Chicago?
Muradi: Oh, yeah, the deep-dish was great!
What are your plans moving forward?
Muradi: I plan to continue pursuing research in cardiovascular science, gain more research experience, and further develop my skills in this field as I work toward my future academic and career goals. Apart from that, I hope to graduate in May 2028. UTA has been very supportive, especially Professor Laura Mydlarz. Everyone here is very sweet.
