College of Science Research

The forefront of discovery

The College of Science is home to forward-thinking faculty and students who are highly active in research, from securing funding to publishing to presenting at University, state, national and international conferences and symposiums. We encourage students to become involved in research from their very first semester on campus. This, combined with the opportunity to utilize the latest in scientific equipment such as that found in UTA’s Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies, gives Maverick Scientists a distinct advantage when they graduate and enter the workforce.

The College of Science has played a big role in UTA earning classification as a R1: Highest Research activity university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. With this classification, UTA is among a distinguished group of 115 institutions including Harvard and MIT in the R1 “highest research” category.

In 2021, UTA became just the fourth institution in the state to achieve designation as a Texas Tier One university, a significant milestone of excellence in academics and research that brings with it access to the state’s National Research University Fund. The College of Science played a critical role in UTA reaching this prestigious level.

The College of Science had more than $28 million in research expenditures in fiscal year 2022, its highest-ever total. In the past four years, the College has brought in more than $100 million in total research expenditures from sources such as NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Welch Foundation, among others.

Our faculty and students are pushing the boundaries of knowledge in a variety of fields in order to address many of the crucial problems facing our world today. Much of their research is done with faculty and students from other departments and other colleges, on campus and around the world. They’re doing interdisciplinary research in a wide variety of areas, including:
