Here's how some of our graduate students spent their summer
Sadia Dipa
I had my most hectic summer ever with taking two courses, worked as a Cal-I GTA, and prepared for the Linear Algebra prelim. I enjoyed Dr. Shipman's class (MATH 5340 Discrete Mathematics for Problem Solving) so much. Moreover, it was my first coursework with that beautiful professor. I worked really hard for the prelim, and fortunately the hard work paid off! Feeling blessed!

Last summer (2026), I interned as a biostatistician at Novartis headquarters in New Jersey where I could connect with deer (which were wandering the Novartis campus). I was on the Advanced Quant Sciences (AQS) team, where I built the Survival Data Maturity Analyzer, a Shiny application for long-term oncology trials. Alongside the internship, I revised my BayeSPeer paper for JRSSA submission and worked on a second manuscript on Bayesian Binomial Deconvolution. I also visited Times Square on the 250th anniversary of Independence Day.

I was a GTA in an undergraduate research program called MSRI-UP. My role was to mentor 18 students and work with them in their respective research groups. The program took place at SL Math institute in Berkeley, CA and the research topic was numerical methods for PDEs. This experience was very impactful on my growth as a mathematician and professional.

This summer, I worked as a USDA Agricultural Research Service intern on spatial analysis for agricultural field trials and was admitted to the HACU National Internship Program to continue my work with USDA-ARS. I also presented a poster at the 11th Workshop on Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Georgia State University, attended an NSF-CBMS Regional Research Conference at Eastern Michigan University, and presented a talk and chaired a session at Joint Statistical Meetings 2026 in Boston.
