Requirements to Become an Official BSW Major

UTA Undergraduate students are considered to be Intended (INT) until they complete pre-BSW/BSSUT requirements set by the department, they are seeking a degree in. Each department has a unique set of requirements that students must meet to ensure that they are ready for more advanced level courses of their program for graduation. Once an SW-intended or SUT-intended student has completed all of the BSW/BSSUT requirements they will complete a Major Transition Declaration form and wait for decision for the Undergraduate Program Director.

Complete these steps to be Accepted as a BSW Major

  1. Be Admitted as a UTA BSW-Intended Student
  2. Earn a ‘C’ or higher in 5 INT courses
  3. Earn a Minimum Cumulative GPA
    • Bachelor of Social Work Majors: 2.5+ GPA
    • Bachelor of Science in Substance Use Treatment Majors: 2.25+ GPA
  4. Complete a Undergraduate Major Transition Declaration Form
  5. Complete BSW/BSSUT Declaration and Ethics Policy Agreement
  6. Complete BSW/BSSUT Major Acceptance Agreement
  7. Attend Undergraduate Orientation

As a BSW Major

Complete BSW Major Coursework: 60 hours of social work coursework including 4 social work electives enabling students to design their BSW to meet their interests.

Acquire experience through required Social Work Internship: minimum of 480 hours in the field through split placement (SOCW 4951 and SOCW 4952) block placement  (SOCW 4955 and SOCW 4956).

Select a Minor: The BSW degree allows for a minor area of study. Suggested minors offered by the School of Social Work include Diversity Studies and Substance Use Treatment.
