DEGREE OVERVIEW

The UTA College of Education provides four options for earning a masters’ degree, offering the flexibility you have been looking for and the personal support you need. Options exist for online programs in literacy, math, and science education. Face-to face coursework can also be tailored to the master’s program. Choose the degree option that best fits your goal.


ABOUT THE PROGRAM

  • This master’s degree provides opportunities to advance in teaching, research, and leadership.
  • All programs of study are 30 credit hours.
  • In addition to the master’s degree, some options offer add-on certifications for those certified and teaching in Texas.

DEGREE OPTIONS

Literacy Studies

  • The literacy studies master’s degree program provides classroom teachers and district content specialist a way to gain expertise in literacy education.
  • The literacy studies program also provides a path to Texas certifications in English as a second language (ESL supplemental) and reading specialist (RS) for qualified Texas-certified educators.
  • Teachers outside of Texas can consult with their state agency in regard to obtaining RS and ESL certifications upon completing the master’s degree.
  • The preparation program is state and nationally accredited, with strong pass rates on the certification exams.
  • All 30 credit hours of coursework are online.

Master of Education in Curriculum-Literacy Education

Mathematics Education

  • The mathematics education, non-thesis master’s degree is designed for classroom teachers in grades K-12, district content specialists, and those in a variety of alternative educational settings, such as museums and corporate education/outreach divisions.
  • Courses emphasize teaching mathematics to students in grades K-12, using problem-based, inquiry-based teaching strategies consistent with math disciplines and centered on how people learn.
  • All 30 credit hours of coursework are online.
  • The program of study does not lead to any type of teacher certification.

Master of Education in Curriculum-Mathematics Education

Science Education

  • The science education, non-thesis master’s degree program in science education is designed for classroom teachers in grades K-12, district content specialists, and those in a variety of alternative educational settings, such as museums, zoos, nature centers, and corporate education/outreach divisions.
  • Courses emphasize teaching science to students in grades K-12, using problem and inquiry-based teaching strategies consistent with science disciplines and centered on how people learn, linking research and theory to practice..
  • All 30 credit hours of coursework are online.
  • The program of study does not lead to any type of teacher certification.

Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction-Science Education

Open Option

  • This 30-hour master’s degree in education offers flexibility in the focus.
  • The six courses chosen support the candidate’s professional growth through enhancing expertise in an academic discipline or obtaining an add-on certificate, such as ESL.
  • Four courses provide the core courses, which feature effective teaching and classroom research.
