The Department of History offers UTA students a wide variety of courses and programs to choose from, including three separate B.A. degree plans and four different minor options.

Our interdisciplinary offerings allow you the flexibility to explore subjects based on your personal interests while equipping you to excel in your chosen vocation by cultivating the abilities to think critically; to analyze complex texts; and to communicate ideas precisely across any medium.

Expanding experiential learning opportunities will further help you develop practical skills such as data management, spatial analysis, audiovisual production, and basic web design.

Degree Plans

UTA undergraduate students interested pursuing a B.A. in History may select from three different degree plans offered by the department. This choice must be made prior to accumulating 75 total credit hours (or, roughly, by the middle of your junior year).

Note: In Fall 2019 the Department of History will unveil a series of changes to our undergraduate catalog and curriculum. The principal changes include:

  1. a new course numbering system
  2. revisions to the foundational course HIST 3300: "Introduction to Historical Research" 
  3. a new capstone experience - HIST 4395: "History Seminar"
  4. twenty (20) new course offerings, including HIST 4390: "History Internship"

Suggested Course Sequences

The Bachelor of Arts in History consists of 120 hours of coursework (including the University’s basic core, 36 hours of History coursework, 14 hours of foreign language, and a required 18-hour minor). The UTA History Department offers a wide variety of courses covering diverse subfields including African-American History, Military History, Latin American History, European History, the History of Science and Technology, Geography, and Disability Studies. The B.A. degree allows students the flexibility to explore subjects and courses based on their personal interests while preparing them to excel in their future careers by cultivating their abilities to think critically; to analyze complex texts; and to communicate ideas precisely across most any medium. The Department’s expanding experiential learning opportunities further aim to assist students in developing transferable skills including data management, spatial analysis, audio-visual production, and basic web design. Students who complete the Bachelor of Arts in History will be well prepared to begin their professional careers or to further their education in law, business, or graduate school.

The Bachelor of Arts in History-Secondary Social Studies Education Certification consists of 122 hours of coursework (including the University’s basic core, 36 hours of History coursework, 14 hours of foreign language, and 24 hours of Education-focused coursework, field experience, and student teaching). This degree plan also incorporates classes in Political Science, Economics, and Geography to ensure that graduates are fully prepared in the broader field of Social Studies. Upon completion of all degree requirements, students will have the opportunity to take the State of Texas Teaching Certification examinations administered by the Texas Education Agency. Students who successfully complete this examination will be certified to teach Social Studies grades 7-12.
