Minors

Any major at UTA can be paired with the Geography Minor which consists of 18 hours of Geography coursework of which at least six (6) hours must be taken at the advanced (3000 and 4000) level. Students may count six hours of GEOL credit toward the Geography minor, so if you take Geology 1301 and 1302 for your core science credit, you are only a few courses away from a minor in Geography.

Geography is much more than just placing labels on a map, memorizing capitals and countries or just the natural stage upon which human history unfolds. As a geography minor you will learn how to employ the lenses of place, space, and location to better understand the dynamic nature of human-environmental relationships that shape us and our planet. Geography explores connections between the distinct cultural and physical landscapes and environmental processes of the earth’s major continents and regions. As a geography minor you will learn how to map and explore the earth from your own local ‘sense of place,’ to the planetary scale where a ‘bird’s eye’ view of the earth will offer you a new perspective on its oceanic and terrestrial bodies. We offer courses in human, physical, world, historical and film geography, in addition to geographical information systems (GIS), where you can acquire applied digital mapping and cartography skills. As a discipline that integrates the arts, humanities and sciences, your imagination is the only limit to how you can combine a minor in geography with your own chosen major.

Students earn the Geography Minor by completing six (6) courses in GEOG with at least two (2) upper-level courses (3000- or 4000-level). Students may count two (2) courses in Geology (GEOL) toward their Geography Minor.  The following GEOG courses are offered on a regular basis.

The History Minor gives students near total freedom and flexibility by allowing them to count almost any of the department’s courses toward their program of study. Better yet, the History Minor is the “easiest” minor for any UTA undergraduate student to complete.

The “standard” minor in History is available to all non-History majors. It consists of 18 hours of History coursework of which at least six (6) hours must be taken at the advanced (3000 and 4000) level.

The History Minor gives students near total freedom and flexibility by allowing them to count almost any of the department’s courses toward their program of study. Better yet,the History Minor is the “easiest” minor for any UTA undergraduate student to complete.

All undergraduate students at UTA are required to complete the department’s two-course sequence in US History (HIST 1311 and HIST 1312) as part of the university’s core curriculum. Some may also take one or more additional History courses as part of a separate degree plan. Still others arrive at UTA having completed course equivalents via AP Exams or transfer credits.

Whether you’ve fulfilled your required History courses on the UTA campus OR transferred in credit from AP exams, high school dual credit courses, or a community college – they count. If you’re a new transfer student it’s possible that you may only need as few as two courses (six credit hours) to finish your History Minor!

The History of Technology and Science Minor enables undergraduate students to pursue in-depth historical study of ideas, inventions, individuals, and institutions, foundational to the formation of the contemporary world. The Minor is particularly valuable for students enrolled in the Colleges of Engineering; Nursing and Health Innovation; and Social Work as it provides them unique opportunities to focus on subjects directly relevant to their future vocations.

The Department's Minor in the History of Technology and Science (HoTS) provides students an opportunity to explore how technological development and scientific innovation have shaped societies, cultures, and institutions across time and place. While the Minor is open to all undergraduate students, those pursuing Majors in STEM-related disciplines will find it particularly valuable in advancing understanding of the historical origins and development of their vocational fields.

The Minor in Military History provides students an opportunity to undertake focused study of the origins, development, and influence of armed conflict in the human past. Students fulfill the program’s requirement by completing courses examining historical conflicts and/or military eras. Special Topics courses devoted to military subjects may be counted toward the Minor.

The Department's Minor in Military History provides students an opportunity to undertake focused study of the origins, development, and influence of armed conflict in the human past. After fulfilling the two university-required core courses in US History, you can wrap up a Minor in Military History by successfully completing any four (4) of the classes below.
