Minerva Cordero

Dr. Minerva Cordero is a leading voice in advocating for improved access to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education for women and underrepresented groups. She grew up in her native Puerto Rico with a love for mathematics and followed that passion to a college degree and then to doctoral studies in the United States. Her area of research is in finite geometries.

She has served in leadership roles on numerous state and national STEM education initiatives. Her tireless work as a mentor has led to a host of accolades, including the 2022 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. In 2020 she was one of 120 female STEM innovators to be named national IF/THEN Ambassadors. These STEM professionals serve as role models for young girls and inspire the next generation of pioneers.

“I strive to be a role model for other women and girls in mathematics. My goal is to show them that it doesn’t matter what their background, experiences, ethnicity, or socio-economic level are; they can accomplish great things and achieve their dreams. Mathematics impacts just about every aspect of our lives and a career in mathematics is very rewarding.”
