The fall 2022 semester is under way and the College of Science kicked off the new academic year with a trio of Maverick Stampede events designed to help students learn about some of the opportunities available on campus while mixing in plenty of fun and the chance to make some new friends.

First up was Ready, Set, Research and a student/faculty mixer, in the Planetarium and Chemistry & Physics Building atrium, on August 26. The purpose of Ready, Set, Research is to inform students about the plentiful resources available to those who want to get involved in research. Kenyatta Dawson, director of the UTA Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), talked about how undergrads can get the ball rolling to participate in research, and about the various programs UTA offers to help in this endeavor.

UTA programs offering assistance to undergraduate students in research include inSTEM, the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP), the McNair Scholars Program, the Undergraduate Research Assistant Program (UGRAP), and the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UGROP). See the OUR website for more information.

In addition to Dawson, three students talked about their own research experiences and explained how research has enhanced their educational experiences at UTA. Following the presentation, students had the chance to meet with College of Science faculty members and ask questions about their respective departments’ research programs. More than 80 students attended the function.

On August 29, the Breezeway Bash outside the Life Sciences Building offered students the chance to meet with members of a number of UTA science student organizations and find out how to get involved. The College has more than 30 student organizations which meet regularly throughout the semester and provide excellent opportunities for meeting industry professionals, service activities, networking, and meeting new people with similar interests. Rita’s Italian Ice provided more than 380 free frozen treats during the event, which were most welcome on a hot and muggy day.

The College hosted Movie Night at the Planetarium on August 30 with a screening of the 1995 film Apollo 13 on the Planetarium’s giant 60-foot dome. More than 100 students came out for the free event, which featured the award-winning film starring Tom Hanks and Kevin Bacon and based on the true story of the harrowing 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission.
