Kaci O'Donnell is the advisor for Philosophy majors and minors. Emmy Piercy is the advisor for Medical Humanities certificate students and minors. In addition, special advisors are available for Pre-Law, Pre-Med, and Pre-Business students as well as students planning to attend graduate school in Philosophy.

GRADUATE WORK IN PHILOSOPHY

Majors who are interested in graduate work in philosophy should consult with Dr. Kenneth Williford, the department graduate advisor, during their junior year.

PRE-LAW

Majors who intend to apply to law school will find courses in critical thinking, contemporary moral problems, logic, ethics, philosophy of law, and philosophy of language particularly useful. Interested students should consult Dr. Shaun House, a philosophy professor who is also a licensed attorney. Students are also strongly encouraged to take advantage of the resources available at U.T. Arlington's Pre-Law Center.

CERTIFICATE IN MEDICAL HUMANITIES AND MINOR IN MEDICAL HUMANITIES AND BIOETHICS

The Department of Philosophy and Humanities offers students the opportunity to examine the intersection of medicine, ethics, and the liberal arts. Students may pursue either a Certificate in Medical Humanities or a Minor in Medical Humanities and Bioethics, selecting from a wide range of courses across the College of Liberal Arts that address health, healthcare, and human experience. These programs prepare students for careers in medicine, public health, bioethics, and related fields, while fostering critical thinking, ethical reflection, and a deeper understanding of the social and cultural dimensions of health. Drs. Eli Shupe and Steve Gellman are the co-directors of the Medical Humanities program and Emmy Piercy is the advisor for the program.

PRE-BUSINESS

It is possible to combine the philosophy major with a business administration minor in preparation for business school. (See Liberal Arts Major/Business Administration Minor section in the introduction of the College of Liberal Arts entry in the Undergraduate Catalog.) Students considering business school may consult with Dr. Shaun House in this connection.

PRE-THEOLOGICAL

Majors who plan to enter a school of theology should consider electives in ethics, history of philosophy, and philosophy of religion. Interested students may consult Dr. Kenneth Williford or Dr. Peter Zuk for special advising in this connection.

PRE-MEDICAL

A departmental faculty advisor is available to assist majors who intend to apply to medical school. The major program will be coordinated with the Health Professions Advising Office of the College of Science. Interested students should contact Dr. Steven Gellman or the UTA Health Professions Office.
