An enhanced pathway for future scientists and healthcare professionals.

The Biology Scholars Program at UTA provides high‑achieving undergraduate students with research‑centered educational experience that prepares them for medical school, graduate school, and other professional programs.

Program Features:
  • Research skills training
  • Early placement in active research laboratories
  • Close faculty mentorship
  • A cohort‑based experience that builds community and accountability
  • Structured training in scientific thinking and communication
  • Preparation for competitive graduate and professional programs

First‑Year Research Experience

A defining feature of the Biology Scholars Program is the first‑year research experience, which introduces students to authentic biological research early in their undergraduate careers.

During their first year, Biology Scholars participate in a structured, course‑embedded research project designed and mentored by Biology faculty. Students work collaboratively to investigate a real biological question, gaining hands‑on experience with:

  • Experimental design and hypothesis development
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Interpreting and communicating scientific results
  • Connecting foundational biology concepts to real‑world research problems

Two people in a laboratory observe samples under a microscope while viewing magnified images of microscopic organisms on a computer monitor.

This experience culminates in a formal presentation of findings, helping students build confidence, scientific identity, and communication skills early in college. Outcomes from the program show that students gain a clearer understanding of how research works, feel more connected to faculty, and are better prepared to pursue independent research opportunities in later years.

Program Requirements & Eligibility

Students admitted to the Biology Scholars Program typically meet the following criteria:
  • First‑time in college freshmen
  • Highly competitive standardized test scores (generally SAT >1300 or ACT >28)
  • Ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class
  • High school GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Planning to enroll in BIOL 1441 during the fall semester of their freshman year
  • Commitment to maintaining a minimum 3.2 GPA while in the program
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for learning biology and engaging in scientific inquiry

These criteria help ensure that students are well prepared to take advantage of the program’s early research and mentoring opportunities. Students who do not meet all criteria listed above are still encouraged to apply. The selection committee will consider applicants with alternative credentials and preparation, such as advanced science coursework, research participation, or other significant science related experiences completed during high school.
